Hessonite, known as Gomed, is the honey-coloured gemstone of Rahu, the north lunar node. Rahu governs ambition, sudden events, foreign connections and hidden forces, and Gomed is worn to steady and channel that energy.
Rahu is a shadow planet with no day of its own, so Gomed is energized on Saturday evening, often in Rahu’s planetary hour, keeping the intention clear and grounded.
Beej Mantra
ॐ भ्रां भ्रीं भ्रौं सः राहवे नमः
Om Bhraam Bhreem Bhraum Sah Rahave Namah
A salutation to Rahu, the shadow planet of ambition and the unexpected.
Chant 108 times (1 mala)
The right day, paksha and time
Hessonite carries the energy of Rahu (Rahu), so it awakens best when you energize it in tune with that planet. Choose the planet's own day, the right lunar fortnight, and a quiet hour, and the stone connects with you far more strongly.
- Day: Saturday.
- Paksha (lunar fortnight): Krishna Paksha (waning moon).
- Time: Twilight, after sunset. If you happen to know the planetary hour (hora) of Rahu, choosing it is even better.
- Keep ready: the Hessonite set in silver or panchdhatu, a clean copper or steel bowl, raw cow's milk and Gangajal, a ghee lamp (diya), incense, a few fresh flowers, and a mala to count on.
Bathe and put on fresh clothes before you begin, and sit facing east or north. Give yourself enough time so nothing feels hurried. The quiet, sincere feeling you hold matters just as much as the steps.
Purify the gemstone (Shuddhi)
- 1Place the Hessonite in the bowl and cover it fully with raw cow's milk and Gangajal.
- 2Let it rest for a few hours. Many people leave it soaking overnight so it settles through the quiet hours before dawn.
- 3This gently washes away any dull or heavy energy the stone may have gathered while it was mined, cut and handled.
- 4Lift it out, rinse it with clean water (a final splash of Gangajal is lovely), and pat it dry with a soft, fresh cloth.
Please do not use soap, chemicals or an ultrasonic cleaner for this. Plain milk, water and Gangajal are all that tradition asks for.
Set up your sacred space (Sthapana)
- 1Spread a clean cloth on a low table or your altar and place your chosen deity, or a picture of them, upon it.
- 2Light the ghee lamp and the incense, and offer a few fresh flowers.
- 3Rest the purified Hessonite in front of the lamp so its light falls softly on the stone.
- 4Sit comfortably facing east or north, with your back straight.
Awaken the planet's energy (Pran Pratishtha)
This is the heart of the ritual. You are inviting the living energy of Rahu to settle into the stone. Take a few slow breaths, look at the Hessonite, and quietly hold in mind why you want to wear it.
Now chant the beej (seed) mantra of Rahu with full attention. One full mala, 108 repetitions, is the least you should do to energize it. Chant more if you have the time and the devotion.
ॐ भ्रां भ्रीं भ्रौं सः राहवे नमः
Om Bhraam Bhreem Bhraum Sah Rahave Namah
A salutation to Rahu, the shadow planet of ambition and the unexpected.
Chant 108 times (1 mala)
Keep your eyes softly on the gemstone as you chant, and picture it filling with warm light. When the mala is done, cup the stone in your palms, touch it to your forehead, and ask the planet, in your own words, for its blessing.
Wearing your energized gemstone
- 1Wear the Hessonite the same Saturday, right after the ritual, while the energy is still fresh.
- 2It is usually worn on the middle finger of the right (working) hand.
- 3Touch it first to the feet of your deity, or an elder you respect, then to your eyes, before you slip it on.
- 4Quietly promise yourself to keep it clean and to treat it with care.
Caring for your gemstone
- Take it off for anything that could badly soil or knock the stone, and keep harsh chemicals away from it.
- Wipe it clean now and then. If it has been off for a long while or feels dull, you can re-energize it briefly on the planet’s day.
- Rahu is unpredictable, so trial the stone for a few days and watch for signs before you commit.
- Do not casually combine Gomed with other gems, as nodal gems can clash with certain stones.
Who should wear Hessonite, and what it helps with
Hessonite is considered when Rahu is prominent or troublesome in the chart, or during Rahu’s mahadasha. Like the other nodal gems, it should be worn only after analysis.
- Helps calm the confusion, fear and scattered thinking of a troubled Rahu
- Traditionally supports ambition, foreign opportunities and sudden gains
- Linked with protection from unseen negativity and manipulation
- Said to help during Rahu dasha and unsettled periods
A stone this powerful is best worn only after your birth chart has been studied. The right gem strengthens you, while an unsuitable one can unsettle you, so when in doubt, please have your chart checked first.
