Yellow Sapphire, known as Pukhraj, is the gemstone of Jupiter, the guru of the planets and the giver of wisdom, prosperity, marriage and good fortune. It is among the most auspicious and widely worn of all gemstones.
Jupiter is kind and expansive, so Pukhraj is energized on Thursday morning to line the stone up with Jupiter’s uplifting energy.
Beej Mantra
ॐ ग्रां ग्रीं ग्रौं सः गुरवे नमः
Om Graam Greem Graum Sah Gurave Namah
A salutation to Jupiter, the great guru of wisdom, fortune and dharma.
Chant 108 times (1 mala)
The right day, paksha and time
Yellow Sapphire carries the energy of Jupiter (Brihaspati), so it awakens best when you energize it in tune with that planet. Choose the planet's own day, the right lunar fortnight, and a quiet hour, and the stone connects with you far more strongly.
- Day: Thursday.
- Paksha (lunar fortnight): Shukla Paksha (waxing moon).
- Time: Brahma Muhurta, before sunrise. If you happen to know the planetary hour (hora) of Jupiter, choosing it is even better.
- Keep ready: the Yellow Sapphire set in gold, a clean copper or steel bowl, raw cow's milk and Gangajal, a ghee lamp (diya), incense, a few fresh flowers, and a mala to count on.
Bathe and put on fresh clothes before you begin, and sit facing east or north. Brahma Muhurta is the calm hour and a half before sunrise, and is felt to be the most sacred time of day for a ritual like this. Give yourself enough time so nothing feels hurried. The quiet, sincere feeling you hold matters just as much as the steps.
Purify the gemstone (Shuddhi)
- 1Place the Yellow Sapphire in the bowl and cover it fully with raw cow's milk and Gangajal.
- 2Let it rest for a few hours. Many people leave it soaking overnight so it settles through the quiet hours before dawn.
- 3This gently washes away any dull or heavy energy the stone may have gathered while it was mined, cut and handled.
- 4Lift it out, rinse it with clean water (a final splash of Gangajal is lovely), and pat it dry with a soft, fresh cloth.
Please do not use soap, chemicals or an ultrasonic cleaner for this. Plain milk, water and Gangajal are all that tradition asks for.
Set up your sacred space (Sthapana)
- 1Spread a clean cloth on a low table or your altar and place your chosen deity, or a picture of them, upon it.
- 2Light the ghee lamp and the incense, and offer a few fresh flowers.
- 3Rest the purified Yellow Sapphire in front of the lamp so its light falls softly on the stone.
- 4Sit comfortably facing east or north, with your back straight.
Awaken the planet's energy (Pran Pratishtha)
This is the heart of the ritual. You are inviting the living energy of Jupiter to settle into the stone. Take a few slow breaths, look at the Yellow Sapphire, and quietly hold in mind why you want to wear it.
Now chant the beej (seed) mantra of Jupiter with full attention. One full mala, 108 repetitions, is the least you should do to energize it. Chant more if you have the time and the devotion.
ॐ ग्रां ग्रीं ग्रौं सः गुरवे नमः
Om Graam Greem Graum Sah Gurave Namah
A salutation to Jupiter, the great guru of wisdom, fortune and dharma.
Chant 108 times (1 mala)
Keep your eyes softly on the gemstone as you chant, and picture it filling with warm light. When the mala is done, cup the stone in your palms, touch it to your forehead, and ask the planet, in your own words, for its blessing.
Wearing your energized gemstone
- 1Wear the Yellow Sapphire the same Thursday, right after the ritual, while the energy is still fresh.
- 2It is usually worn on the index finger of the right (working) hand.
- 3Touch it first to the feet of your deity, or an elder you respect, then to your eyes, before you slip it on.
- 4Quietly promise yourself to keep it clean and to treat it with care.
Caring for your gemstone
- Take it off for anything that could badly soil or knock the stone, and keep harsh chemicals away from it.
- Wipe it clean now and then. If it has been off for a long while or feels dull, you can re-energize it briefly on the planet’s day.
- Even benefic gems should suit your chart, so confirm Jupiter’s placement before wearing.
- Buy from a trusted source, as the market has many treated and synthetic yellow stones.
Who should wear Yellow Sapphire, and what it helps with
Yellow Sapphire is broadly benefic and is often the first gem recommended. It especially suits those with a weak but benefic Jupiter, and is a classic remedy for delayed marriage.
- Linked with wisdom, prosperity and steady growth
- Traditionally supports marriage prospects, especially for women
- Connected to good fortune, respect and a spiritual leaning
- Said to bring optimism, clarity of values and right guidance
A stone this powerful is best worn only after your birth chart has been studied. The right gem strengthens you, while an unsuitable one can unsettle you, so when in doubt, please have your chart checked first.
