Red Garnet, known as Tamda, is a deep-red stone worn as a substitute for Red Coral. It shares Mars’ energy of courage, vitality and determination.
It is energized on Tuesday morning, the day of Mars, just as Coral would be.
Beej Mantra
ॐ क्रां क्रीं क्रौं सः भौमाय नमः
Om Kraam Kreem Kraum Sah Bhaumaya Namah
A salutation to Mars, the planet of energy, courage and drive.
Chant 108 times (1 mala)
The right day, paksha and time
Red Garnet carries the energy of Mars (Mangal), so it awakens best when you energize it in tune with that planet. Choose the planet's own day, the right lunar fortnight, and a quiet hour, and the stone connects with you far more strongly.
- Day: Tuesday.
- Paksha (lunar fortnight): Shukla Paksha (waxing moon).
- Time: Morning, after sunrise. If you happen to know the planetary hour (hora) of Mars, choosing it is even better.
- Keep ready: the Red Garnet set in gold or copper, a clean copper or steel bowl, raw cow's milk and Gangajal, a ghee lamp (diya), incense, a few fresh flowers, and a mala to count on.
Bathe and put on fresh clothes before you begin, and sit facing east or north. Give yourself enough time so nothing feels hurried. The quiet, sincere feeling you hold matters just as much as the steps.
Purify the gemstone (Shuddhi)
- 1Place the Red Garnet in the bowl and cover it fully with raw cow's milk and Gangajal.
- 2Let it rest for a few hours. Many people leave it soaking overnight so it settles through the quiet hours before dawn.
- 3This gently washes away any dull or heavy energy the stone may have gathered while it was mined, cut and handled.
- 4Lift it out, rinse it with clean water (a final splash of Gangajal is lovely), and pat it dry with a soft, fresh cloth.
Please do not use soap, chemicals or an ultrasonic cleaner for this. Plain milk, water and Gangajal are all that tradition asks for.
Set up your sacred space (Sthapana)
- 1Spread a clean cloth on a low table or your altar and place your chosen deity, or a picture of them, upon it.
- 2Light the ghee lamp and the incense, and offer a few fresh flowers.
- 3Rest the purified Red Garnet in front of the lamp so its light falls softly on the stone.
- 4Sit comfortably facing east or north, with your back straight.
Awaken the planet's energy (Pran Pratishtha)
This is the heart of the ritual. You are inviting the living energy of Mars to settle into the stone. Take a few slow breaths, look at the Red Garnet, and quietly hold in mind why you want to wear it.
Now chant the beej (seed) mantra of Mars with full attention. One full mala, 108 repetitions, is the least you should do to energize it. Chant more if you have the time and the devotion.
ॐ क्रां क्रीं क्रौं सः भौमाय नमः
Om Kraam Kreem Kraum Sah Bhaumaya Namah
A salutation to Mars, the planet of energy, courage and drive.
Chant 108 times (1 mala)
Keep your eyes softly on the gemstone as you chant, and picture it filling with warm light. When the mala is done, cup the stone in your palms, touch it to your forehead, and ask the planet, in your own words, for its blessing.
Wearing your energized gemstone
- 1Wear the Red Garnet the same Tuesday, right after the ritual, while the energy is still fresh.
- 2It is usually worn on the ring finger of the right (working) hand.
- 3Touch it first to the feet of your deity, or an elder you respect, then to your eyes, before you slip it on.
- 4Quietly promise yourself to keep it clean and to treat it with care.
Caring for your gemstone
- Take it off for anything that could badly soil or knock the stone, and keep harsh chemicals away from it.
- Wipe it clean now and then. If it has been off for a long while or feels dull, you can re-energize it briefly on the planet’s day.
- Garnet is fairly durable, but still avoid hard knocks and harsh chemicals.
- As with all Mars stones, watch that the extra energy does not tip into irritability.
Who should wear Red Garnet, and what it helps with
Red Garnet suits those who want Mars’ energising benefits in a milder, affordable form, or where Red Coral is unavailable or unsuitable.
- Supports courage, energy and confidence
- Traditionally used to gently strengthen a weak Mars
- Linked with drive, stamina and passion
- An affordable alternative for those advised Red Coral
A stone this powerful is best worn only after your birth chart has been studied. The right gem strengthens you, while an unsuitable one can unsettle you, so when in doubt, please have your chart checked first.
