How to Wear Shani Challa (Iron Ring)
The Shani Challa is the traditional iron ring of Saturn. Here is the complete Saturday ritual: purification, the Saturn hora, facing west, the Shani beej mantra (27 times at least), the right finger, and how to care for it.

The Shani Challa is a plain ring of pure iron, worn as a remedy for Saturn (Shani). Iron is Saturn’s own metal, so a properly worn iron ring keeps a steady, protective link with the planet of karma, discipline, patience and justice.
Unlike Blue Sapphire, which acts quickly and must be tested first, the iron ring is a gentle and forgiving remedy. It is widely worn during Sade Sati, Shani Dhaiya (Ardh Ashtama or Kantak Shani) and the Mahadasha or Antardasha of Saturn, to soften delays, fear and heaviness, and to bring steadiness in their place.
The ritual below is simple, but each step has a reason behind it. Follow it on one quiet Saturday, during Saturn’s own hour, with a calm and sincere mind, and the ring becomes a living remedy rather than just a piece of metal.
Beej Mantra
ॐ प्रां प्रीं प्रौं सः शनैश्चराय नमः
Om Praam Preem Praum Sah Shanaishcharaya Namah
The seed (beej) mantra of Saturn, a salutation to Shani Dev, the slow and just lord of karma and time.
Chant 27 times at the least; 108 times (1 mala) if you can
Choosing a genuine Shani Challa
The power of this remedy lies in the iron itself, so the ring must be the real thing. Traditionally, the most valued Shani Challa is hand-forged from the horseshoe of a black horse (kale ghode ki naal) or from an old iron nail of a boat (naav ki keel). A plain ring of pure, untreated iron is perfectly acceptable too.
- Pure iron only. Steel, chrome-plated, nickel-plated or painted rings are not a Shani Challa.
- Plain and simple, with no stone set in it. It is the metal that works here.
- A full, unbroken ring that sits comfortably on the finger, neither tight nor loose.
- If you can, buy it on a Saturday, or have it made and handed to you on a Saturday.
Iron can mark or irritate some skin. If you notice a rash or itching, take the ring off and speak to your astrologer about an alternative rather than forcing it.
The right day and time
Saturday is Saturn’s own day, so the ring is always purified and first worn on a Saturday. Within that day, the ring is worn during the Shani hora, the planetary hour ruled by Saturn. Each day is divided into 24 horas, each ruled by one of the seven planets in turn, and the hour of a planet is when its energy is most directly available.
On a Saturday, Saturn’s hora comes around four times: at sunrise, in the early afternoon, in the evening after sunset, and once before dawn. The early-afternoon Shani hora is the one we recommend, when the Sun has begun its descent towards the west, the direction ruled by Saturn.
- Day: Saturday.
- Time: the afternoon Shani hora. It lasts roughly an hour, and its exact clock time changes with your city and the season, so always check it for that Saturday.
- Paksha: any Saturday will do. A Saturday in the Krishna Paksha (waning moon), a Shani Amavasya, or Shani Jayanti is considered especially favourable for Saturn.
- Keep ready: the iron ring, a small iron or steel bowl, a little mustard oil, Gangajal (or clean water with a few drops of Gangajal), a mustard-oil lamp (diya), incense, a few black sesame seeds (kale til), blue or dark flowers (Aparajita is ideal), a clean cloth, and a mala or your fingers to count on.
Before the day, open our Panchang, set your city, move to that Saturday’s date, and look under “Hora (Planetary Hours)” for the Saturn hora in the afternoon. On the same page, check Yamagandam and Rahu Kaal: if part of the Shani hora overlaps them, do the wearing in the clear part, or use the evening Saturn hora after sunset instead.
Find the Saturn hora on our Panchang →Purify the ring (Shuddhi)
- 1On Friday night, place the ring in the iron or steel bowl and pour in enough mustard oil to cover it. Mustard oil is Saturn’s own offering, and it draws out the heavy energy the ring picked up while it was made and handled.
- 2Let it rest in the oil overnight.
- 3On Saturday, after your bath, lift the ring out and wipe off the oil.
- 4Rinse it with Gangajal, or clean water with a few drops of Gangajal, and dry it straight away and thoroughly with a soft cloth, so it does not begin to rust.
Please do not scrub the ring with soap, acid or chemical cleaners. Mustard oil and Gangajal are all the tradition asks for. Keep the oil from the bowl and offer it at a Shani temple or under a Peepal tree later.
Set up your sacred space (Sthapana)
- 1Bathe and wear clean clothes. Dark blue, black or grey are associated with Saturn, but any fresh, clean clothing is fine.
- 2Spread a clean cloth (black or blue if you have one) on a low table, and place a picture of Shani Dev on it. If you have no picture, Lord Hanuman or Lord Shiva may be worshipped instead, as both are said to calm Saturn.
- 3Light the mustard-oil lamp and the incense, offer the flowers, and scatter a few black sesame seeds before the picture.
- 4Rest the purified ring on a few sesame seeds in front of the lamp.
- 5Sit facing west, the direction of Saturn, with your back straight and your feet steady on the ground.
Awaken the ring (Pran Pratishtha)
First take a moment to remember Lord Ganesha, so the ritual moves forward without obstacles. A simple “Om Gan Ganapataye Namah”, said once or a few times, is enough.
Now pick up the ring and hold it in your right hand, or keep it in front of you with your eyes resting on it. Quietly state your name and why you are wearing it, for example, “to receive Shani Dev’s blessing and to ease the hardships of this period.”
Then chant the beej mantra of Saturn with full attention. Chant it at least 27 times. If time and devotion allow, complete a full mala of 108; more is always welcome, but never rush it.
ॐ प्रां प्रीं प्रौं सः शनैश्चराय नमः
Om Praam Preem Praum Sah Shanaishcharaya Namah
The beej mantra of Saturn, inviting Shani Dev’s steadying presence into the ring.
Chant 27 times at the least; 108 times (1 mala) if you can
Chant slowly and clearly, keeping your mind on the ring. When you finish, touch the ring to the feet of Shani Dev’s picture, then to your forehead, and ask for his blessing in your own words: for patience, protection and the strength to do the right thing.
Wearing your Shani Challa
- 1Wear it right after the mantra, still facing west and while the Shani hora is still running. Begin the mantra early enough that you finish within the hora.
- 2Slip it onto the middle finger of the right hand. The middle finger is Saturn’s finger, the one that rises from the Mount of Saturn on the palm.
- 3Once it is on, fold your hands, and thank Shani Dev.
- 4If possible, make a small offering the same day: give mustard oil, black sesame, black urad dal, black cloth or food to someone in need, or feed a black dog or crows. Saturn is pleased by humble service and charity.
Some traditions place the ring on the left hand, especially for women. If your astrologer has advised a particular hand, follow that advice; otherwise, the right middle finger is the usual choice.
Caring for your Shani Challa
- Wear it continuously. There is no need to take it off at night.
- Keep it dry. Wipe it after a bath or after washing your hands, and rub on a drop of mustard oil now and then to keep rust away.
- If the ring rusts badly, cracks or breaks, do not keep wearing it. Replace it with a new one and perform this ritual again on a Saturday.
- Every Saturday, chanting the beej mantra 27 times while wearing the ring, or lighting a mustard-oil lamp under a Peepal tree, keeps the connection fresh.
- Avoid wearing a gold ring on the same finger as the iron ring.
- Saturn rewards honesty, hard work and kindness to workers, servants, elders and the poor. Living this way is the remedy that makes every other remedy work.
Who should wear a Shani Challa, and what it helps with
The iron ring is one of the safest Saturn remedies. It is commonly advised for anyone passing through Sade Sati, Shani Dhaiya, or the Mahadasha or Antardasha of Saturn, and for those whose chart shows Saturn as weak or troubled. It is also worn as a gentler alternative when Blue Sapphire is too strong or unsuitable.
- Traditionally eases the heaviness, delays and setbacks of Sade Sati and Shani Dhaiya
- Brings patience, discipline, focus and steady effort
- Said to protect against negative energy, the evil eye and sudden misfortune
- Supports stability in career and work, especially in long, slow-building efforts
- Helps calm anxiety, fear and restless thinking linked to Saturn
Even though the iron ring is gentle, Saturn is a serious planet. It is always best to have your birth chart studied first, so the remedy suits your Saturn and your current dasha. If you feel unsettled after wearing it, take it off and consult your astrologer.
