Crystals support and focus your own intention, and are a complement to, never a replacement for, medical or professional care. Need help?

A crystal picks up the energy around it as you carry and use it, and over time can feel heavy or dull. Cleansing clears that build-up; charging then refills the stone with fresh energy and a clear intention. Together they keep a crystal working at its best.

The catch is that crystals are minerals, and not every method suits every stone. Water dissolves some, salt corrodes others, and sunlight fades many. The form matters too: a bare tumble stone is hardy, while a bracelet or a set pendant needs gentler care. Use the finder below to pick the right method for your exact piece.

The right way to cleanse a crystal depends on the stone and its form. Pick how you own Cleansing & Charging Crystals and we’ll show which methods are safe.

  • Moonlight

Leave it out overnight, ideally under a full moon.

Gentle and safe for every crystal and every setting.

  • Sacred smoke

Pass it through sage, palo santo, loban or incense smoke.

Safe for every crystal; no water or heat involved.

  • Sound

Ring a bell, tuning fork or singing bowl beside it.

Only vibration touches the stone, so nothing can be damaged.

  • Selenite / clear quartz

Rest it on a selenite plate or in a quartz cluster for a few hours.

Cleanses and charges gently — perfect for soft stones and jewellery.

  • Breath & intention

Hold it, breathe over it and picture bright light clearing it.

    Always available and completely safe.

  • Dry brown rice

Nestle it in uncooked rice for a day, then discard the rice.

Dry and gentle — safe even for set jewellery and soft stones.

  • Sunlight

A short spell of gentle morning sun.

Only short, soft morning sun; long exposure can dull the colour.

  • Running water

A few minutes under a cool stream or tap.

A quick, cool rinse only; never soak this stone.

  • Salt / salt water

Resting in dry sea salt or brine.

Only very hardy tumbled quartz should touch dry salt; most people skip it.

  • Earth burial

Buried in soil or a plant pot.

Use dry soil and keep it brief — this stone dislikes moisture.

This is the general guidance. Open any crystal’s own guide to see water, salt and sunlight tuned exactly to that stone.

01

The four methods that are always safe

If you remember nothing else, remember these four. They never damage any crystal, in any form, so they are the safe default when you are unsure.

  • Moonlight — leave the crystal out overnight, especially under a full moon, to cleanse and recharge it.
  • Sacred smoke — pass it through the smoke of sage, palo santo, loban or incense.
  • Sound — ring a bell, tuning fork or singing bowl beside it, or chant.
  • Selenite or clear quartz — rest it on a selenite plate or in a clear-quartz cluster for a few hours.

Breath and focused intention are always safe too: hold the stone, breathe over it, and picture bright light washing it clean.

02

The methods that depend on the crystal

  • Running water only suits hard, non-porous stones (the quartz family, agate, jasper). Never rinse soft, porous or metallic crystals such as Selenite, Malachite, Pyrite, Hematite, Turquoise, Lapis or Celestite.
  • Salt and salt water pit and corrode most stones and all metal, so most people skip salt entirely and use it only for very hardy tumbled quartz.
  • Sunlight recharges some stones but fades others. Keep Amethyst, Rose Quartz, Citrine, Smoky Quartz, Aventurine, Fluorite, Aquamarine, Amazonite, Celestite and Turquoise out of strong sun.
  • Earth burial grounds and resets hardy raw or tumbled stones, but is not for jewellery or delicate pieces.

When a stone is soft, porous, metallic or dyed, treat water, salt and sun as “avoid” and reach for the four always-safe methods instead.

03

Match the method to the form

  • Tumble stones are the hardiest; follow the individual stone’s own water, salt and sun rules.
  • Raw pieces, clusters and geodes should not be submerged if they are soft or layered; salt can lodge in the crevices. Moonlight, smoke, sound and selenite are ideal.
  • Bracelets on elastic or thread must avoid water, salt water and heat, which weaken the cord and tarnish metal spacers. Use smoke, sound, selenite, moonlight or dry rice.
  • Pendants, necklaces and rings in metal settings should avoid water (it tarnishes silver and loosens glue), salt (it corrodes) and earth burial. Smoke, sound, selenite and moonlight are perfect.

04

Charge and program your crystal

  1. 1Cleanse the crystal first with one of the safe methods.
  2. 2Hold it in cupped hands, close your eyes and breathe slowly until you feel settled.
  3. 3Fix on one clear intention and say it in the present tense, as if it is already true.
  4. 4Breathe over the stone and picture your intention flowing in as warm light.
  5. 5Seal it with a short affirmation, then wear the stone or keep it where you will see it.

Re-charge with a new intention whenever your goal changes; cleanse first, then program afresh.
