A Rudraksha is seen as a living seed of Lord Shiva’s grace. Before wearing it, you cleanse and awaken it so its subtle energy connects fully with you. The method below applies to every Rudraksha, from the 1 Mukhi to the rare Gauri-Shankar.
For each bead’s presiding deity, planet and specific beej mantra, see the individual guides linked from the library.
Beej Mantra
ॐ नमः शिवाय
Om Namah Shivaya
The five-syllable salutation to Lord Shiva, the lord of all Rudraksha.
Chant 108 times (1 mala)
Why energization matters
A Rudraksha already carries natural energy, but energizing it purifies the bead and builds a conscious link between the bead, its presiding deity and you. This is what turns a simple bead into a personal spiritual companion.
Always begin with a genuine, undamaged bead, whose faces (mukhis) run cleanly from top to bottom.
Choose the right day, paksha and time
- Monday, Lord Shiva’s day, is ideal.
- Shivratri, Somvati Amavasya and Pradosham are especially powerful.
- The Shukla Paksha, the waxing fortnight of the moon, is preferred, though the day and your devotion matter most.
- Energize in the morning after a bath, ideally during Brahma Muhurta, the calm hour and a half before sunrise, with a settled and devotional mind.
Purify the bead
- 1Soak the Rudraksha in raw cow’s milk for a few hours.
- 2Rinse it in clean water, then bathe it with Gangajal.
- 3Dry it with a soft cloth and apply a touch of sandalwood paste. If you like, work a single drop of pure mustard or sandalwood oil into the faces.
Never use soap or detergent, and never soak it for days. A few hours is plenty.
Awaken the bead (Pran-pratishtha)
- 1Place a Shiva Lingam or image of Shiva on a clean cloth, light a ghee lamp and dhoop, and offer bilva leaves.
- 2Chant "Om Namah Shivaya" 108 times to honour Lord Shiva.
- 3Then chant the bead’s own beej mantra 108 times, which you will find in its specific guide.
- 4Hold the bead to your forehead and heart, and ask for the deity’s blessing.
Wear it and care for it
- Wear it the same Monday, in a red or white thread, or a silver or gold cap.
- Keep it in touch with the skin, and take it off in impure places.
- Oil it lightly every few weeks so it does not dry out or crack.
